Untitled Gallery
Emerging from a related series which interprets the emotional soul of interior spaces, these works began in Fall 2020 as a response to the contemptible and ever evolving “new normal.” I believe they reflect the process of change – all the self-doubt, and paradoxically, freedom from that doubt.
By using acrylic paint on translucent polyester film, I mark out the general composition. I take advantage of the translucent nature of the material and work on both the front and the back. When drawing, as in painting, the time varies in capturing these spirits. Some move along easily and are physically created quickly while others take more convincing to rest.
History, theory, practice, and intuition are important aspects of my process. I keep several small sketchbooks which contain as many notes as drawings. At the current moment, here are five common themes in those notes: attention is currency, play is essential , contradiction is inevitable, the use of language, although necessary is oftentimes inadequate, and research on Hammershoi’s quiet paintings and Fernanda Gomez’s playful methods of creating sculptures. Like these artists, my goal is to foster questions; to create work that anyone can approach, turn to someone nearby and ask, “what is this about?”
