Mylar Interiors
At a concert or theatrical performance, I find myself dissecting the set designs and their reflections of the characters in the production. My paintings are concerned with the effects of our surroundings on us and the impressions we leave on them. Evoking the ideas of James Castle and Vilhelm Hammershøi, among others, the works hold a distant familiarity. They interpret the emotional soul of interior spaces.
As I prepare for my paintings with observational sketches, I try to notice the feeling of the space. Using acrylic paint on translucent polyester film, I mark out the general composition. Depending on the piece, I take advantage of the translucent nature of the material and work on both the front and the back. This process of working on either side continues until the spirit of the space is captured.
These places where I spend great amounts of time, the home I grew up in, my studio, and my apartment, evolve with me and my artwork.
